Day 1 of 7

Balance- A Seven Day Devotional Journey

Luke 10: 38-42

Martha and Mary

38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:42but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

This passage states that Martha was “cumbered about much serving”. In other words, serving had become a cumbersome chore instead of true worship. Although Martha was near what she needed, her schedule and obligations were drawing her away from fully enjoying her visit with Jesus. We can tell that this is true because Martha was frustrated by her sister’s lack of help and anxious about everything being just right for Jesus’ arrival. True worship produces fruits like joy and peace, the better part, verses anger and aggregation. Service is more enjoyable when it flows from our relationship with Christ Jesus.

Thought of the day: Have I placed my service to God before my relationship with him?
